This short clip captures the reality of vulnerability in one of natures most beautiful playgrounds. Those that know this place have a deep respect and a warranted fear of being washed over the ledge and being caught on the inside.

As many have said before, this wave is not easy to judge, it walls up and looks like it will hit just right, you drop in, it looks like to barrel will shape up and you’ll make it under the lip for the most memorable ride of your life. Then in a split second, everything changes, the end section shuts down and the lip has collected you and your wondering which way is up.

Sure, there’s jet skis out there and your fleeting hope is that they can make it in for a pick up before the next set wave detonates on top of you. But, despite their best efforts, there isn’t enough time and even though you were finger tips away from reaching the sled, its time to prepare for a beat down.

Lachie Brearley @lachiebrearley gives us an insight into what this looks like from the beach. So close, but yet so far. The anticipation that your about to have the weight of a 10ft slab drop on top of you. You get washed over the ledge and caught on the inside. The ski can’t make it in. Should you paddle hard and try to duck under? Should you stop where you are and ditch your board? Either way, it aint going to be fun.

The images show us one part of the experience, the visual aspect. What you can’t appreciate is the violence of the wipeout, the chaos of the beat downs and the eventual release into the safety of the channel. Only a surfer knows the feeling, or so they say!
